“I didn’t grow up writing songs but music was always a huge part of my life,” he says. “I would play old records of Kenny Rogers and Lionnel Richie and play them on repeat til the needle would wear out. I swear I could feel the lyrics and melodies just moving under my skin.”
Justin grew up in a small town called Seymour Indiana. It was so small John Mellencamp wrote the hit song “Small Town” about it. “I still remember as a kid I’d see his white stretched limo drive through town. I wish I could say I was inspired to be like him but… I never really took music seriously til 30 or so years rolled by.
I just happened to be standing at the right place at the right time. A dozen years of songwriting met a moment of luck and I was writing with a 4X Grammy-Winning producer. I thought he was kidding when he said we should cut an entire catalog of my songs and pitch them. I was just this guy from Denver writing songs on an island. I started traveling out there every month and we got to work. After we recorded about 6 songs he called me to say he thinks we have multiple top 40’s and thinks I should be the one to release them.”
“Music has the power to make people feel some of the most profound emotions in life. That’s why I decided I want to write songs for the rest of my life that make people happy to be alive.
That feels right.
I think our songs reflect that too. In a lot of ways I feel like I’ve missed the boat and am too old to get into this game. At the same time, I think it’s given me a perspective I wouldn’t have otherwise.
Good Life is just that - in hindsight I realize I took a wrong turn when I moved to the city to chase money instead of what really matters. That’s a hard lesson to learn and that stole decades of my life. But I think I’m back on track now and in a lot of ways, I’m just getting started.
To all of you out there who have some dreams worth chasin’, it’s never too late to start chasin’ ‘em and hope to see you out there.”
